APCC EDHR Lead responds to Liberty Report

14/02/2019

As we identified in the Policing Vision 2025, technology plays a central part in everything we do; we must embrace the opportunities it presents for policing in the C21st, to keep all our communities safe.

However, we additionally recognise that fundamentally, policing is built on its people; the Code of Ethics signed by all officers states that police officers should take responsibility for their decisions and be aware of the influence that unconscious biases can have.

As democratically elected representatives, Police and Crime Commissioners play an important role both locally and nationally in terms of providing scrutiny over the way that our communities are policed - including the use of digital technology in policing - and holding the Chief Constable to account for their duties under the Equality Act.

As the APCC Lead on this area, I will continue to work with colleagues across policing on the national level to ensure that equality, diversity and human rights are central to discussions on the use of digital technology in policing.
