100 days until the public make crucial choices about crime
With 100 days to go until Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) are elected to oversee every police force in England and Wales, candidates are active in every area and independent inspectors have revealed that the preparations for PCCs are on track. Although the final line up of candidates will not be confirmed until October 19th, Labour announced their list of hopefuls on 18 June. The Conservatives have revealed their candidates in all but five areas, and a host of candidates from smaller parties plus 43 Independents have confirmed that they will stand on November 15th. Of the 130 candidates already confirmed, 81% are male.
The Chairman of the Association of PCCs’ Transition Board, Simon Duckworth commented:
“Voters will make crucial choices about crime in just 100 days. Police and Crime Commissioners’ brand new powers could make the public safer but they will also have to take tough decisions so it’s important that the public have their say on November 15th. Whoever sets the police budget, defines police priorities and holds the force to account could deliver real change in every community. With 100 days to go until they’re elected, it’s reassuring to know that the plans for PCCs are securely in place.”
Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary’s recent report ‘Preparing for Police Commissioners’, which examined how well the police authorities which will be replaced by PCCs are preparing for the transition said:
“Police Authority members are to be commended for their continuing commitment and professionalism. . . . our inspection showed that all authorities are continuing to discharge their statutory duties, while simultaneously preparing in various ways for the arrival of PCCs. They all have transition plans in place, and are broadly making progress against them.”
ENDS.
