APCC backs “Together, we can tackle child abuse” campaign
The Association of Police and Crime Commissioners is backing a new campaign led by the Department for Education to raise awareness of child abuse.
The Together, we can tackle child abuse campaign encourages the public to protect children and young people by reporting any concerns of abuse or neglect to their local council, NSPCC or the police. It is also aimed at reminding professionals, including teachers and healthcare professionals who work with children, of their safeguarding responsibilities.
APCC Victims Lead, Dame Vera Baird QC PCC said:
“This is a hugely important campaign aimed at breaking down some of the barriers that currently prevent people reporting concerns over child abuse or neglect.
“It is often the case that children do not understand when they’re being groomed or be able to distinguish a good relationship from a bad one – although all PCCs encourage PSHE in schools with those components.”
APCC Deputy Victims Lead, Marc Jones PCC said:
“We all have a responsibility to understand the different kinds of abuse and know what the signs are so we can make the appropriate interventions. The message of the campaign is clear, even if you are not certain, if you have concerns that a child is at risk, you should speak to someone.
“We know for certain that the personal damage caused by child abuse is profound and can last a lifetime. In tackling it, the overwhelming focus has to be on prevention, which is why this awareness campaign has our full support.”
