National Volunteers Week - Independent Custody Visitors
In light of National Volunteers Week, Martyn Underhill, APCC Deputy Lead for Custody and Mental Health and Police and Crime Commissioner for Dorset, said:
“Volunteers play a vitally important although sadly often overlooked role in many areas of policing, and this has proven essential throughout the COVID-19 crisis.
“As well as Special Constables, who have contributed thousands of hours of service during the crisis and often put the safety of others before themselves, there are an array of volunteers carrying out a huge range of services behind the scenes.
“These include Independent Custody Visitors who give their own time to make sure people in police custody are being treated properly, volunteers who sit on independent scrutiny panels helping hold police forces to account, and those who work for the charities we rely on to support people struggling with mental health challenges.
“Their commitment has been vital over the last few weeks and we should all take a moment to thank these dedicated individuals who give so much.”
